This is tough

May 9th, 2006 at 03:36 am

I knew that we were in debt. We keep trying to whittle the debt down, some of our friends are much more wealthy than we are, they don't flaunt it at all, it is pressure that I seem to put on myself. We seem to do well at sticking to our budget for a few weeks, sometimes a few months, then we blow it! It seems that all of the work we focused on was wasted. It is tough to change my spending mentalitiy. I don't want to give up all of my luxuries. I feel selfish!

I felt selfish at first not wanting to curb my spending. It IS hard to change that "got it spend it" mentality. And even harder to do that when its going for nice little luxuries. I treat myself out to lunch at a great Chinese restarunt once a month(they have a buffett from 11:00 to 3:00 all you can eat for $4.95 and their food is very good) That's my luxury.

May I suggest that you write down all of your luxuries and then pick 2 or 3 that mean the most to you, then put the rest of them on hold? Or perhaps you could pick 5 or 6 and rotate them from week to week?

Sticking to a budget certainly does not mean giving up all your luxuries, maybe just identifying they few that mean the most to you and cutting out the rest.

    Best wishes

if you stick to your budget 80% of the time, it will work out.. you are gonna have times when it is out of whack.. just redirect the next month and go right back into your budget.... we just spend 60% of what we make and save the rest in different funds for different goals.

Its really tough because with spending, you get something - a thing or a service or a memory. With saving, you get...a higher number on an account.

You need to personalize your savings account and demonize your credit card account. Smile You've got to really think, am I really going to get $X amount of fun from this? You've got to be selective and skeptical.

I have a few little luxuries on my budget; all are budgeted for too!
One visit to my Chiro every 4 weeks, 30c Ice Cream & free coffee at a local fast food when I'm feeling down bit, or 2nd hand novel for under $1 or trip the library and Monthly lunch with my ex-co workers plus cable internet. As I am debt free I can find the money to do these things.

Just look for a little luxury that you or your family like too do then find out the cheapest way of have it in your budget. Even if it's just renting a new movie twice a month if you liking going to the movies.

Hi Ski, Take a look at why you blow it. I know that when I make a major splurge it's usually because I am feeling sad, angry or put upon by the rest of the world thus allowing myself to justify the splurge as something I deserve. Days later and equilibrium restored, I then berate myself for my foolish spending. (Then I Ebay the item, get less than half of what I originally spent on the item and then Im really bummed out!). Anyway, I guess I would suggest looking for minor splurges when you feel the need to treat yourself. Best of luck to your financial future!
